In January, we went to visit our daughter Raya, and I did a fitting for the new slipcovers I was making for her posted here.

Yesterday her beautiful home was on the Design Sponge blog.
Here they are finished:

When the fabric first arrived at my door, I thought, "Is this pink or red?", but it is obviously pink and perfect. I can't imagine anything else looking so pretty.

I am so proud and amazed by her talent. You can see more of her awesome photography at her website.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-72742122485799811692012-07-12T11:30:00.001-07:002012-07-12T14:37:26.673-07:00Just a small kitchen remodel

I've found that when your kids grow up and move out you really need to move to a bigger house, not a smaller one, unless of course you started out with a nice big roomy one. We, like many I'm sure, stuffed ourselves and our four kids into a smallish four bedroom house. Now one of those rooms is my sewing workshop and one is occupied by our youngest child. So when kids come to visit they are now a family of four and have to squeeze harder to fit. And.....when there are grandchildren around, they need toys to play with, and it's nice to have special "Grammy's House" toys that they look forward to playing with. So, see what I mean.

Two of our grandchildren live very close, and we get to see them pretty often, which is what led me to do this "kitchen remodel". I really wanted to find a cute vintage play kitchen to satisfy some of those playing needs, but just wasn't having any luck. While I was searching around on the web I found lots of play kitchens that people had made from night stands and other pieces of small furniture. I pinned them here.

Unfortunately, my before picture has disappeared. I "put it down" on my computer and now I can't find it, but here is the after picture:

The original cabinet had long skinny legs, that I cut off and added casters instead. The oven door opened from the side, so I just moved the hinges. It was already a separate compartment. The bar sink and nobs came from the local salvage yard, and the burners are some kind of caps I found in the plumbing department of the hardware store. I printed and cut out spirals shapes I found on the net and affixed them with clear contact paper. The paint came from a local recycling facility. My idea to modge podge an old tablecloth on the back splash didn't work, so I stapled on a piece of oilcloth.

The pot holders were made from some vintage quilt squares that have been sitting in a basket waiting to be made into something useful. I am really trying to use what I already have these days.

As a child, I was an outdoor kid. I loved to be outside roller skating, or exploring with my two older brothers, catching the cicadas, or chasing down horned toads. When I wasn't outside, I was making things...doll clothes, shoe box houses for my troll dolls, or drawing. I didn't really have the patience to sit with a book, which made book reports for school especially painful. When I was in junior high, I read a book about the adventures of Marco Polo. I couldn't put it down. I loved the stories of adventure and travel.
It instilled in my a love of adventure...... as long as there isn't too much danger involved.

On Friday I delivered a slipcover job to a home in beautiful Carmel, so while I was in the area, I decided to travel East about 10 miles to Carmel Valley. I had heard stories and had to see for myself. I have heard over and over again about a wonderful store called Tancredi and Morgen. I found it with the help of some kind locals. It consists of two beautiful little shops. While I was there, the woman who was working in one of the shops reminded me that there is a men's wear outlet (Robert Talbott) in Carmel Valley Village that sells remnants from the tie factory in Monterey. I got so excited. I had read about this place in a small magazine article about a crafter who uses silk tie remnants, and had heard it mentioned at a local fabric store. (Was I eaves dropping? I don't remember.) Again, since this is a Valley with a Village where the businesses don't have giant signs, I had to ask for help in finding it. I came out of the store with an armload of remnants of tie silks and Egyptian cotton shirt fabrics. The woman who runs the shop let me bring my camera in and take some pictures.
What's not to like about spring, except for crazy out of control weather. One of my favorite things about spring is the return of flea markets and antique fairs. Our winter was almost spring like with an absence of needed rain, which allowed the flea market to continue, but generally speaking.....
This is a slipcover I just finished for a couple of talented ladies who are always finding neglected but beautiful pieces of furniture and transforming them. This will be taken to a local antique fair in a month or so. I think they have plans for the legs, maybe some white paint.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> I was impressed with the creativity in the flower making. Everyone seamed to enjoy diving into the process. I sure had a good time.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
You can see what she does by visiting her etsy shop, Button Willow Jewelry. Not long ago she asked if I would do a "craft night" with her. I was thrilled. I have wanted to do something like that for a while, and sometimes we need someone to help us move our ideas out of the thought bubble and into reality. It is actually going to be a "Craft Afternoon / Afternoon Tea". I am so excited about it. We are going to make wool flowers, and some simple earrings.
Just listed two new bunnies in my etsy shop. Each bunny seems to have its own personality. This bunny was made from a piece of brown vintage chenille that I bought on ebay. Yes I said brown. Rare, she said. After I sewed the bunny together, before I stuffed it, I noticed that the brown fabric was fading in the sun. I mean really fading, so I decided to just bleach the bunny and extra fabric and it came out pale yellow.
I have Nancy J. Martin's Perpetual Calendar of 365 Quilt Blocks and the last few days have been hard for me because March has these cute blocks:

I love anything that has to do with tea, or teacups, or tea parties and I can just picture this tea pot made from some pretty vintage floral, or even a vintage tablecloth.

A creamer!

And sugar bowl. Can't you imagine a whole tea party quilt with pretty china plates and cupcakes and all sorts of things!? I'm trying to put it out of my mind for now. Maybe I will just do a little sketch, that's all, just one little sketch. One little sketch won't hurt will it?
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-14885558442372187852012-02-29T09:25:00.000-08:002012-02-29T09:25:13.358-08:00Show me the Quilt!
Sunday afternoon was going to be the day that I finally took steps toward finishing two quilts that have been sitting unfinished for....I hate to say it......YEARS. I need to join top, batting and back together with safety pins and then stitch them together. I even bought this book that I am very excited about.

As I was contemplating where I should do this pin basting, a voice from the distance made me look up. It was my husband holding the newspaper and saying, "You didn't go to the Quilt Show yesterday." And I said, "What?! The quilt show is this weekend? How did I miss that? I can still go today, it's not over for five hours."
And just like that, I grabbed my purse and went to look at other peoples finished quilts instead of finishing my own. (But it was so fun.)

I've thought about joining the Pajaro Valley Quilt Association, but haven't yet. I'm sure I would finish more quilts if I did. I love the annual shows. This one was their 34th.

These two small quilts by Jeanne Holmes were a couple of my favorites:

I also liked this one called "Bunny Windows" by Cara Lamb. She added a note that in Japan, instead of a man in the moon, they say it is a rabbit.

Another reason I LOVE the quilt show is browsing the vender "shops". I took a few pictures at one of my favorites. Claudia Bibber's collection of antique and vintage sewing items. I can never get enough of vintage sewing.

Yesterday I went to the Salinas Valley to revisit a home that I have done some sewing for through a very talented designer, Cindy Hattersley. You can see more of her work on her blog, Villa Cantina.

I was near Castle Rock which is mentioned in John Steinbeck’s book Pastures of Heaven.( I need to read that book.)
I got some pictures of some of my work: pillows, window seat and window shade.

Another window seat with pillows and shade.

A slipcovered chair with pleats. Oh how I love pleats on a slipcover.

A pleated chair cushion:
And although I made the large pillows in this last picture, I am including it mostly because I love the bird nest paintings above the bed.
Today I finished up with one appointment to talk about a slipcover with a half hour gap before my next similar appointment. I thought about looking for a cup of coffee somewhere, but without even thinking I drove to the local fabric store that is in the same neighborhood, Harts Fabrics, in Santa Cruz, CA. They have so many great fabrics and tons of inspiration. It was way more refreshing than the coffee would have been.
They should set up some comfy chairs in front of this button wall, so easily entertained people like me could just sit and stare at them. They could serve coffee. It's been a while since we've made the five hour drive to our oldest daughter's house for a visit, so we hit the road on Friday and spent the weekend. It was sooo good to see them all. I was supposed to have her new slipcovers finished, but since they were cut out and not sewn, I took them down for a pin-fitting. The grandkids really wanted to help. The pinning was a really good idea too because they needed a little adjusting.

Besides all the sweet hugs, kisses and conversations, we did some paper crafts.

And topped it all off with a trip to the once a month Ventura Antique Flea Market on Sunday morning. We saw so much fun stuff. I was drawn to a stack of vintage student fashion drawings which I didn't buy, a pile of vintage Nativity figurines, which I didn't buy (the baby Jesus was missing) and lots of other amazing stuff including these spools of thread (which I didn't buy).

The drive home was enjoyable too. I love the landscape between our house and theirs. A very nice weekend.

Wow! So many days, weeks and months since my last post. I’m not sure what happened to me. I am still making slipcovers and pillows and cushions and bed coverings. Still enjoying my family. Still trying to fit in more time for artwork. (Haven’t added anything to my etsy shop in a while.)

I recently did a major house cleaning and moved some furniture around. My sewing machine drawer collection ended up in the living room as part of the computer / office corner. If you look close you can see my paint color splotch. I am mixing two gallons of different colors of paint that I got free at the recycle shed at the local land fill. I think it will look good. I just have to get it done.

I moved my desk into the garage in my new art corner. I wasn’t thinking about how cold it is in the garage in the winter. It’s only California cold, but that’s still cold enough to be discouraging. This time of year it gets near freezing lots of nights. I like my corner in the garage because it is so quiet, but I think until it warms up a little I might have to try to be creative in the cozier chaos.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-38885437604397394682011-08-13T21:54:00.001-07:002011-08-13T22:25:38.782-07:00Makin’ Buttons!

A couple of years after I started my slipcover business, I was so happy to have the opportunity to buy a used Handy Junior Button Press. My kids used to love pulling the handle down and Presto! a covered button. They are all grown up now, so it is mostly just me having fun with the button maker.

I have lots of vintage embroidered linens around that I use for my Etsy crafts, so I made some buttons from some of the smaller embroideries. These went over to my friend who makes amazing and fun button jewelry and other accessories.

I just finished a couple of fun projects. A desk chair to make someone’s work more fun and a chair for new and expectant moms to rest in at a midwife’s office. Here they sit at my doorstep waiting for a ride home.

The slipcover for the bigger chair was really fun to do. The client found a vintage slipcover made of beautiful bark cloth for a taller, narrower wing chair and I took it apart and moved some parts around to make it work. I had to purchase a contrasting fabric for the back, but added buttons covered in the bark cloth.
They are both safely home now. I will miss them.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-85374052849585964462011-05-26T12:33:00.000-07:002011-05-26T12:33:50.879-07:00Strawberries.

I’ve been making these strawberry sachets for years. I fill them with lavender, top them with leaves made from wool felt, or felted wool sweater pieces, and tie them together with vintage rayon or silk seam tape. Most of these are made from vintage fabric bits, or from men’s ties.

I saw instructions in the Martha Stewart Craft book when I borrowed it from the library, and again saw instructions in the June, 2011 issue of Country Living Magazine.
Well, one baby that is. Our granddaughter was finally born 11 days after the due date. We went down to see her when she was one week old. She is so very sweet and well worth the wait.

As I wait for some slipcover job details to come together, I have been working on projects for my Etsy shop. I just listed one more Bunny, and will be adding a new Lingerie / Pajama Bag tomorrow.

I forgot that I had included the seam allowance in my pattern when I cut this bunny out, so he ended up a little bigger than the others. (More to hug.)

It’s just about time to break out the spring jammies, right?
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-92067283860012073872011-03-10T08:48:00.000-08:002011-03-10T12:16:43.414-08:00Along the way.

I recently spent 11 days at my daughter’s house, hoping to be there for the birth of their second baby. I got to spend a lot of quality time with my 3 year old grandson while she finished up some work. (She is a talented wedding photographer and also designs albums digitally for other photographers.)

One day we went for a drive looking looking for snow. We met up with another family and went for a beautiful hike. We didn’t find snow, but ended up at a gorgeous waterfall and found acorns along the path. I got some great pictures that I will attempt to paint.

I have always been a fan of Salley Mavor who does magical things with wool felt and embroidery. I mentioned to one of the two little girls we were hiking with that the acorn tops can be hats for little dolls. So of course, when we got home, I was inspired to make some tiny dolls for them and use the "hats" we found. I love to spend my evenings with a pile of hand sewing in my lap.

I came home a week ago and we are still waiting for the baby. I am so looking forward to making the trip back to see the little sweetie when she decides to come out of hiding, and to give my grandson the acorn hat doll I am making for him.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-67249568219525641872011-02-18T08:53:00.001-08:002011-02-18T08:58:10.300-08:00TEXTiles.

Paper and Fabric. Two of my favorite things! I just learned that the word “text”, usually associated with the written word, is actually from a Latin word that means fabric.

I can’t wait to visit the exhibit of Isabelle de Borchgrave’s paper fashions at the Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. She has recreated clothing that she has seen in paintings, only out of paper, instead of fabric.

Nothing like a pair of pink paper shoes to make me want to do some paper mache.

Another costume related exhibit I’d love to visit….

This one is at the L A County Museum of Art. It is a collection of European clothing from 1700 to 1915.
Lots of embroidery! Another activity I would love to spend more time on.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-21921607359158763372011-02-16T09:11:00.001-08:002011-02-16T09:19:28.510-08:00Over the river and through the cacti.

One of the interior designers that I work for lives in Chular, 10 miles south of Salinas. It’s a beautiful drive to her house, so I enjoy making the trip once in a while. I always see scenes out her way that I think would be fun to paint, but usually forget to take my camera. Last time I didn’t forget and got some great photos. This little prickly pear patch is around the corner from her house.
I enjoyed working on this painting and am looking forward to carving out some more painting time.
The husband and I are in an informal book club with a few other couples and we just read Sweet Thursday, a follow up book to Cannery Row by Steinbeck. It was really fun to read the stories and colorful descriptions of the places so close to home. It feels more and more like I am driving through a painted landscape when I travel through the area.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-38263525499301439152011-02-05T16:43:00.001-08:002012-02-10T08:15:59.427-08:00From workshop to hilltop.

I just delivered these fun slipcovered chairs, and matching covers for 4 more chairs to an amazing house on top of a hill. (The picture was taken at my house.) When I saw all the nice built-in storage and a big roomy, airy kitchen with tons of cupboards, a huge island and a corner window seat, I said “Did you design your house?” and the answer was “yes”. All the beautiful, personal features gave it away.
I like the mixture of fabrics she chose. When the bolts first arrived, I wasn’t so sure, but I think they turned out really nice and fit with her house and décor really well. I have been seeing a lot of ikat lately. Anthropology has a lot of fun stuff in the “home” section right now. After doing some reading, I found out that it is made by tying and dyeing the threads before they are woven. I found a good blog post about the process here. As it says, most of the ikat we see is more likely a print made to look like ikat and not the real thing. Either way it makes a house feel homey, like there might be sheep grazing in the backyard, and homemade bread in the oven.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-90854375308865547092011-01-13T22:43:00.000-08:002011-01-13T22:43:12.146-08:00Working it out.
In the past I have been reluctant to do artwork because I want the finished product to be really good…something that I can be proud of, but I am starting to enjoy the actual process more. That is a good thing since I will never reach the point where I am happy with my work unless I practice.
It is so easy for me to be drawn in to sewing projects because I do so much of it and my sewing tools and space are always set up, but I will be trying to give equal time to art projects that don’t involve sewing.

A few nights ago I gathered up my colored pencils that I bought decades ago. I found them in various trays and boxes throughout the house. They have been used by my kids to color many geography maps, charts of the human body, and to color in pictures that they asked me to draw for them. Well, I decided that I needed to treat myself to a new set, and I did. They are beautiful and drawing is a lot more fun without the huge gaps in the color spectrum.

This drawing includes a doll dress that I bought from a fellow sew-person in town who has the best yard sales you can imagine. I love seeing her and what she has rounded up to sell, and what sewing projects she is working on. The chenille pin cushion was made by another local sewing artist.KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691619292597034635.post-3555030374301774722011-01-12T11:28:00.001-08:002011-01-12T11:29:55.086-08:00Don’t stand there, stand here.

Due to the cottage like size of our house, I always have to move furniture around to make room for the Christmas tree, and that always puts me in the mood to rearrange everything right after I put all the decorations away. My awesome antique dress form was hidden behind a shelf in a room that had way too much furniture in it. So after doing some more rearranging, and selling a cute but large armoire, she now has a roomier place to stand. I feel bad enough that she can’t sit once in awhile.

I saw this great spread on lonnymag.com from J.Crew and loved it. As you can see I am a collector of vintage pins. (Mostly bought in lots of broken jewelry on e-bay and at yard sales.)

I thought this would be the perfect outfit for my Acme Adjustable Collapsible Ellanam dress form. On the label it says L and M Co. in parenthesis. I should call her Ellan or maybe Auntie Am.

I haven’t done any painting in a while because my teacher is having surgery on her foot and I’ve been kind of busy. I have made a commitment to myself, though, to do more artwork and started with a colored pencil drawing last night. I am amazed at how practicing in one medium with a good teacher carries over into other forms. I could really tell a difference in the drawing process. I will post at least a section of my drawing later.
KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05233874618354597420noreply@blogger.com0
